Cardamom Chai (Elaichi Chai)
Share
Cardamom chai is elegant and fragrant, with a gentle sweetness and a floral aroma that feels instantly calming. This is a perfect option for people who want chai without heavy spice heat. In many homes, elaichi chai is a daily staple—simple, quick, and absolutely satisfying.
Ingredients (2 mugs):
-
1 ½ cups water
-
1 cup milk
-
2 tsp black tea leaves (or 2 tea bags)
-
4–6 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
-
1–2 tsp sugar (or to taste)
Method:
-
Crush the pods: Use the flat side of a knife or a mortar to crack open the cardamom pods. This releases oils quickly.
-
Simmer cardamom: Bring water and cardamom to a boil, then simmer 2–4 minutes.
-
Add tea: Add tea leaves and simmer 1–2 minutes.
-
Add milk & sugar: Add milk and sugar, bring to a gentle boil, then simmer 1–2 minutes.
-
Strain & serve: Strain into mugs. Optional: top with a tiny sprinkle of crushed cardamom for aroma.
Flavor notes & tips:
-
Cardamom can turn medicinal if overcooked. Keep spice simmering moderate.
-
If you want it more “dessert-like,” use jaggery instead of sugar.
-
Works beautifully with dairy or plant milks—oat milk makes it extra creamy.
Serving ideas:
Perfect with pastries, cake, or anything vanilla. Also makes a great base for a cardamom iced latte-style drink.
