Clove Chai (Laung Chai)

Clove Chai (Laung Chai)

Clove chai is bold and intensely aromatic. Cloves bring warmth and a slightly peppery edge, and a little goes a long way. This is a fantastic chai for rainy days or for anyone who loves deep spice flavor. The trick is balance—too many cloves can overpower everything, so we keep it measured and smooth with milk.

Ingredients (2 mugs):

  • 1 ½ cups water

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 tsp black tea leaves (or 2 tea bags)

  • 3–4 cloves (start small—cloves are strong)

  • 2–3 cardamom pods (recommended to round the flavor)

  • 1–2 tsp sugar (to taste)

  • Optional: small ginger slice, tiny cinnamon piece

Method:

  1. Bloom the cloves: Bring water to a boil with cloves (and cardamom if using). Simmer 3–5 minutes.

  2. Add tea: Add tea leaves and simmer 1–2 minutes.

  3. Add milk & sweetener: Add milk and sugar, bring to a gentle boil, then simmer 1–2 minutes.

  4. Strain & serve: Strain into mugs and enjoy hot.

Flavor notes & tips:

  • If you love clove flavor, increase by 1 clove only at a time.

  • Cardamom is the best partner spice for clove—it softens and sweetens the profile.

Serving ideas:
Pairs with chocolate snacks, buttery pastries, or even spiced cookies.
